It’s 2006, right at the peak of the millennium's awkward, beautiful transition. In Zagora, the desert sun is setting, turning the sky into a massive, dreamy gradient of pastel blue and cotton-candy pink. Sitting at the edge of the palm groves is Fatine. She’s the ultimate cool girl of the era, nailing that perfect mix of heritage and hyper-modern style: a mint-green veil, heavy traditional jewelry, and a pair of translucent pink sunglasses that look like they came straight out of a music video. She’s a total local, but her playlist is strictly global.
Growing up where the town meets the Sahara meant childhood was a mix of timeless desert heat and very 2006 realities. After school, the ancient mud-brick alleyways of the old ksour became her crew's hangout spot. They’d wander through the labyrinth of historic streets, passing around a single pair of cheap plastic headphones plugged into a silver Walkman, splitting a cassette tape. Their soundtrack was a chaotic, beautiful mashup of Lebanese pop star Nancy Ajram, Cheb Khaled's raï anthems, and international hits like Shakira’s "Hips Don't Lie" or Rihanna's "SOS" echoing from local storefronts.
They’d kill time over cups of sweet mint tea while waiting for the afternoon heat to break, fueling up on local corner-shop favorites—tearing into flaky, buttery msemen crepes spread with La Vache Qui Rit cheese, or sharing paper cones of warm, sugar-coated peanuts bought from a street vendor.
Summer nights possessed a magic all their own. Once the scorching daytime sun vanished, the desert finally woke up. Fatine and her friends would spend those endless nights under a brilliant canopy of Saharan stars, sitting on woven rugs in cool interior courtyards. Amid the low hum of late-night gossip and the crackle of a radio, they would talk about their aspirations. Fatine dreamed of moving to Casablanca or Marrakech to study design, wanting to bridge the gap between the ancient textiles she grew up with and the high-fashion glossies she imported from Europe. She wanted to build something completely her own, balanced right on the edge of the future. Carrying this bag is like holding onto a piece of that summer—a nostalgic, vivid mashup of deep roots, big dreams, and early-2000s fantasy.
